District finals of the Countrywide Car Hire Southern Region Super Cup will be played this weekend in all the 14 districts, organisers and sponsors have confirmed.

Southern Region Football Association’s boss Raphael Humba confirmed the start ofthe games, ending months of uncertainty regarding the future of the MK8 million showpiece which was launched in April.  The district finals were scheduled for May.

"We are humbled by the commitment of our sponsors because a lot has been said regarding this cup. We are geared to hosting successful finals in all the districts. In fact, all the committees prepared and what remains is for the finalists to scramble for the MK100,000 at stake,” he said.

Humba said the delay in holding the district finals was due to other pressing logistical issues more especially on the part of the sponsors.

"I must commend our sponsors for showing commitment because they have given us the go ahead to hold the finals. We understand them because the current economic situation seems to have affected alot of businesses,” he added.

Afler this weekend’s finals, the tournament enters the regional phase involving Nsejere League’s Premier and Division teams.

"We will try to avoid compromising the harmonised FAM calendar and in this case, both the league and the Countrywide cup games will be played concurrently. We will take advantage of the league’s first round five-week break to accommodate the Countrywide Cup. Hopefully, we should be concluding the cup by October,” he said.

Countywide Car Hire managing director, Mike Mlombwa, confirmed in an interview that he gave the organisers the greenlight to hold the long-awaited district finals.

“We are ready and we shouldbe finalising all the requiredlogistics by the end of Friday.Their money is readily availableand our apologies for the delay”,said Mlombwa.
